The
concept of gharana is peculiar to North Indian
Classical Music today. The word "Gharana" literally means
"house" and it implies the house of the teacher. It is linked to the very
ancient concept of the Guru-Shishya Parampara
(lineage of teacher /disciple) but with some interesting modern twists. The name 'Gwalior Gharana'
was derived from a geographical location 'Gwalior'.
It is considered to be the oldest among all the gharanas.
In this style, emphasis is laid on rendering the lyrics of the 'bandish'
(composition) with clarity, while demonstrating the integrity of the
raag. The oldest of the
gharanas and one to which most others can and do trace the origins of
their style is the Gwalior
gharana. Some sources believe that Nathan Khan and Peer
Baksh settled in Gwalior
and evolved the style features that led to this gharana.
Others claim that individuals named Nathan Peer Baksh
and Nathe Khan founded the
gharana. There are about 50 Ragas which
are very prominent in this Gharana. Every
Raaga in turn has quite a number of
Chotta Khyaal and
Bada
Khyaal . This Gharana
is considered to be the Mother of all gharanas
simply because most Gharanas have branched from this.
Dr. Vikas Kashalkar's guru Pt. Gajananrao
Joshi, a stalwart of this gharana had a long tradition of the gharana from
Pt. Balkrishnabua Ichalkaranjikar to Pt. Anant Manohar Joshi to
himself. Along with Gwalior Gharana Gajananbuwa learnt from other gharanas
viz. Agra & Jaipur. The following Geneology shows his lineage/links to various
gharanas.
